While talking to a coworker about a possible project upcoming he tossed out a little tidbit of info. He has a 460 sitting in his garage that he yanked from a motorhome. He is a Mopar guy so he has no use for it really. He said if I clean his garage I can have the thing for $100. How dirty can a garage really be right?

Gotta be negative. I assumed more like a garage you would see on Roadkill.
comes over to help work on your car and only drinks beer

the nice thing is that the 385 family (370/429/460) was pretty common so go-fast bits for it don’t cost an arm and a leg. It’s a cast-iron wheezer so you’re not going to get mad top end power (unless you don’t mind if it can’t idle,) but you can make a reasonably peppy stump puller out of it.
what year is it? Carb or FI?

Just a tidbit of information. At least in a sample of 1, the Dodge mobile home like those found in class B campers are not the same engines as found in cars. How do I know?
Well about 20 years ago, a buddy used a car head gasket in his dodge powered RV and about 40 miles into the trip we boiled over. The RV head circulation is different and the car gasket didn’t have the necessary holes. For the next 600 miles we stopped every 30 miles from Chicago to Summit Point to refill the boiling over radiator. Can’t say what engine he had, or if a heavy duty RV type motor is good or bad. Just passing on information.

Does setting everything on fire count as cleaning?

Knowing the guy it is probably carbed. I really didn’t think much of it when he first said it but then started thinking about it more.

I wish, but he has his Mopar crap littered throughout I would assume and you know how those guys can be.

What year is it? The 460's from the late 70's were pretty choked down, low compression pistons, not so great heads, etc, and didn’t make a ton of power. Of course they can be built up to be monsters, but as the saying goes, how fast do you want to spend? I had one for a while and was planning on putting it in my ‘50 F3 some day, but decided that it was going to cost way more than I wanted to build it to even the mild amount of power that I wanted, it was heavy as shit, and would get terrible mileage, which isn’t something I wanted because I want to drive the truck as much as I can. I sold it, a C6 trans, a 9" rear end, and all the accessories, for $400.
If a 460 is what you really want, I’d offer to clean the garage, and get the motor for free, or pay maybe $200-$250 for it and make them clean the garage themselves.
Edit: Coming from an RV it may not have been as emissions choked, I’d look into that, it might be worth it then.

Go for it. There may be beer involved and who knows what other goodies you’ll find in there. And a mild 460 is a BEAST of an engine. Torque for days. However the compression might be kinda weak if its a mid seventies smog motor. But shave the heads, slap in a big honkin’ cam and you’re in business. Also quite a lot of parts from earlier 429 Cobra jets will fit since a 460 is just a bigger version of a 429. Still part of the same engine family at least, that being the 385 Series.

I was trying to decide how expensive I would like it to be. I was looking at the Jon Kaase website earlier. Pretty stuff but also pretty expensive.

The kaase stuff is cool, but there are some really good factory heads y9y could use. The aforementioned Cobra and Super Cobra Jet stuff especially.
Ready for an adventure!
